The 5x1 newsletter aims to be a concise and focused resource for you around the core concept that we will accomplish more of our goals (and accomplish them faster) by designing and implementing systems.

sys·tem [ˈsistəm]
a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network.
a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized framework or method.

1 x Principle of Systemization

The concept of feedback is a core property of systems. All systems have feedback loops. They create pathways where a system's outputs loop back to impact how it will work next. Feedback can be positive, amplifying behaviors, or negative, stabilizing systems. Both forms provide self-regulation. Both help systems balance themselves. Feedback lets systems stay steady even when things are changing by making constant small adjustments. Feedback shows the connections between different parts of a system. Good feedback loops feed what we learn back into the system to improve them and keep them in line with their goal. Even though they're small, the changes accumulate, having a powerful impact on the system. Well-designed feedback loops empower systems to transcend beyond their original designs.

1 x Systemization Quote

"Feedback is not praise or criticism; it's simply information. But for some reason feedback tends to arouse anxiety in the receiver." - Daniel Goleman

1 x Reflection Question

Thinking about the key systems in your life, can you identify their feedback loops? Are the feedback loops well-designed and working properly to improve the system and help you achieve your goal?

1 x Personal System Idea

Examples of personal feedback loops that can be part of everyday life systems:

  • Checking the scale provides feedback on diet and exercise habits, allowing adjustment of health routines.
  • Receiving comments on social media posts provides input on how we come across online.
  • Monitoring finances and spending shows where our money goes, informing future budgeting.
  • Taking personality tests offers insights into our temperaments to better understand ourselves.
  • Tracking fitness wearables gives feedback on activity, sleep, heart rate and helps optimize lifestyles.
  • Journaling and reflecting on experiences helps identify patterns and areas for personal growth.

1 x Business System Idea

Examples of feedback loops that can be part of business systems:

  • Performance reviews provide feedback on our performance, which can be used to improve skills and set new goals.
  • A/B testing in marketing campaigns tracks the effectiveness of different strategies and adjusts accordingly.
  • Financial performance analysis tracks revenue, expenses, and profits, providing insights for future decision-making.
  • Quality control checks ensure consistent standards and identify areas for improvement.
  • Regular check-ins with project teams to assess progress, identify obstacles, and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Feedback from mentors or coaches guides personal or professional development, leading to ongoing growth and improvement.
