5x1: Yes, You Can Just Walk Away

5x1: Yes, You Can Just Walk Away Wednesday, January 17th, 2024

by Monti Pace

The 5x1 newsletter aims to be a concise and focused resource for you around the core concept that we will accomplish more of our goals (and accomplish them faster) by designing and implementing systems.

sys·tem [ˈsistəm]
a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network.
a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized framework or method.

1 x Principle of Systemization

The principle of "sunk cost" states that decisions should be based on future costs and benefits rather than past investments. Systematizing your life and business means not letting already spent time, money, or effort influence your evaluation of whether a system is currently working or worth pursuing. Instead, take an objective look at whether the processes and procedures you have in place are organized, efficient, and driving toward your goals now and in the future. Resist the urge to persist with failing systems just because you already devoted resources to creating them. Be willing to recognize sunk costs, cut losses if needed, and redirect your efforts towards assets and activities with ongoing payoffs.

1 x Systemization Quote

"Sometimes the best investment is realized when you rid yourself of what’s not working." - Danielle LaPorte

1 x Reflection Question

Are you holding onto a project mainly because of the time already invested, even if it's no longer promising or impactful? What could be gained by letting it go?

1 x Personal System Idea

Goal: Not to waste more resources on something that is no longer working simply because you have already spent resources on it.

System Design: Walk away from things no longer serving you, even if you already spent money or time on them.

Quitting a hobby you've invested a lot of money into but don't enjoy anymore.
Ending an unhealthy romantic relationship you’ve been in for years.
Tossing clothes that don’t fit but were expensive.
Moving out of a home after spending money on renovations, because you found a new home that better meets your needs.
Ending friendships that have become negative or one-sided.
Letting go of regret or guilt over a past action rather than dwelling on what went wrong.
Stopping donations to a charity that isn't aligning with your values anymore regardless of past contributions.

1 x Business System Idea

Goal: Not to waste more resources on something that is no longer working simply because you have already spent resources on it.

System Design: Walk away from things no longer serving you, even if you already spent money or time on them.

Discontinuing production on an unprofitable product line.
Closing physical retail locations that are underperforming.
Selling equipment or machinery that is obsolete.
Switching a software system that isn't working for you, even though you already paid an annual subscription fee.
Scrapping an ongoing marketing campaign that is not generating sufficient leads or sales.
Eliminating complex policies or procedures that create excessive red tape and inhibit progress.
Firing or laying off employees who do not have the requisite skills or align with the company culture no matter their tenure.
